Cave Time

In the iloilo airport right now, my flight delayed.
I’m relishing the forced alone-time, it’s given me breathing room to think in peace — a luxury that’s escaped me lately through the sheer frenetic pace of activity. All good, but frenetic nonetheless.
The truth is that we all need cave time, whether it be to do personal reflection or to drink in the world around us ; the calm percolation of ideas could actually give birth to new thinking, providing space to imagineer the future.
I was reminded by one of Bill Gates’ rituals, which is the much-touted Think Week. In a nutshell — twice a year, one of the world’s richest men locks himself up in a personal hideaway to go through mountains of papers and trends and information to forecast where the company should be headed. Now not everybody loves microsoft, but nobody can argue with their success.
I love this ‘think week’ practice — absolutely applicable in business innovation as well as one’s life direction. I think i’ll schedule one soon.
