Spinnin’

A couple of months ago, Nikka Arcilla, a 3rd year student in the Ateneo School of Management approached me because she and other likeminded friends wanted to set-up the first ever school-based organization that was going to focus on Innovation. I eventually met more members of the core group (including Matthew Cua, another student who got in touch with me because he wanted to set-up Pangea Day for the Philippines) and my takeaway was that this group was funky and determined enough to really make this happen in the way it deserves to happen.
Case in point – when we were brainstorming, they were game enough to throw away all sense of traditional “titles”; It’s not President, it’s “The Big Kahuna”; It’s not VP’s, it’s “The Elders”; There are no Departments named Externals, Internals, Human Resources, Marketing, and Finance. In their place we’ve got The Think Tank, The Joint, Imaginaction, The Gallery, The Limelight, and The Treasure Chest.
They were willing to experiment and reinvent everything from the ground up, which is the entire thesis : An Innovation Organization, by its very nature, should have Innovation embedded in every single thing it is and does. How can you get people to change the rules of the game if the org itself is not breaking any of the traditional rules?

Spin is a brand new student group that promotes collaborative innovation to catalyze Filipino ingenuity and creativity. Our Vision is to be the premiere organization in the Ateneo de Manila University that will promote collaborative innovation to catalyze Filipino ingenuity and creativity.
What exactly do we do? We get students of ALL the different courses to come together to create something totally new and innovative. How?
Step One is Imagination. We teach you how to think innovatively and imaginativly. Unleash your creativity, listen to others’ crazy thoughts, and learn about what outrageously innovative things are happening around the world.
Step Two is Networking. Meet students from other courses so that you can help each other bring to life that new and innovative idea. Need a CompSci major? Philo major? Management student? Environmental Science? Chem? Political Science? Grow your network, make valuable new friends, and get people to help you with your idea!
Step Three is Imaginaction. Here at Spin, we don’t want to be just a hub for brilliant ideas. We want you to act on them! During Imaginaction, you and your group will work together to actually create your idea. Don’t worry. It’s possible.
Step Four is Impact. This is when you get to show off your creation! What can you do with an innovative creation? You can either a) use it for a business, b) pitch it to a company or organization that might be able to use it, or c) open source it.
