Country Above Self

Mar Roxas makes the ultimate sacrifice and drops out of next year’s Presidential Race in order to give way to Noynoy Aquino. Citing that this was the most difficult decision he’s ever grappled with in his life, Senator Roxas explains that he had to set aside his personal ambition for the greater good. In his own words, “This is not about us. This is about our people and our country.”
While Senator Noynoy’s ability to take the top post in the land is another discussion altogether, at the very least he is a candidate that can unite the opposition – with this big announcement from Mar as proof. But more than being a unifying figure, Noynoy is also beginning to represent an idea, and thus an ideal; An ideal of an alternative to our country’s current black hole of leadership and moral authority – undoubtedly a halo from his parents National Heroes Ninoy and Cory Aquino. And this ideal is capturing the nation’s imagination, thus making him a winnable candidate.
I don’t know about you, but what Senator Roxas did has given me renewed faith in our leaders. I’m actually optimistic about 2010 and beyond.
Country above self!
